Coronavirus and Business Travel: Best Travel Hacks
The world has seen a lot of changes with COVID-19, but it still hasn’t come to a complete halt. While there are a lot of restrictions on travel, many of us are still participating in corporate travel. If you’re still jet-setting for business, we have a list of tips and travel hacks below that can help you during your time on the road or in the air.
10 Best Travel Hacks for Business Trips
Keep an eye on the news in your destination area. New reports come in every day with information on travel restrictions, case counts and more. If you’re planning on traveling outside your city for work, it’s beneficial to check any news from the area you’re traveling to. If they’ve had a recent rise in COVID-19 cases, you may need to take extra precautions or reschedule your trip. They also may have updated travel restrictions, which may mean you need to reschedule your business travel plans.
Wash your hands often. It sounds a little unnecessary to say, but washing your hands frequently can help stop the spread of germs. Be sure to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds:
After you touch surfaces others have may have touched, sneezed on or coughed on.
After you blow your nose or sneeze.
After you cough.
Before you eat or touch your face.
Keep hand sanitizer handy. Soap and water are not always going to be readily available on your business trip. Hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol can help kills germs, so it’s a good idea to keep some with you. If you’re flying, you should know that TSA has temporarily adjusted the rules for hand sanitizer so you can bring a small bottle or hand wipes in your carry-on.
Remember your face mask. As uncomfortable as they can be, the CDC tells us that masks can help to slow the spread of COVID-19. Wearing your mask can help to protect you and those you meet on your travels.
If you can avoid flying, do it. Crowded flights mean sitting close to others for hours on end. Wearing your mask can help, but if you can choose another mode of transportation or reschedule your trip during an outbreak, do that instead.
If you can’t avoid flying, get to the airport extra early. Because you spend so much of your time in security lines and terminals, you can end up in close contact with other travelers. Getting to the airport early can help you to avoid crowded lines as well as find a seat at your terminal away from anyone else.
Check your hotel’s prevention and cleaning practices. Hotels often post their COVID-19 prevention procedures on their websites which you can review before you leave on business travel. If possible, use as many contactless options as your hotel offers: online check-in, mobile room key, contactless checkout and more. You can also call ahead and ask what kind of extra prevention practices they have in place.
Consider sanitizing your room. If you still don’t feel comfortable with the hotel’s prevention procedures and cleaning, you can always choose to disinfect your hotel room yourself.
Take the stairs. When taking elevators, you can end up in a tight space with strangers for long moments of time. If it’s possible, try to take the stairs to avoid unnecessary crowded areas. Of course, if it’s not possible, try to wait for an elevator where you can ride alone.
Stay home if you display any coronavirus symptoms. This sounds obvious, but many of us don’t know all the symptoms or want to believe we’re not contagious. Stay home and reschedule your business travel plans if you have any of the following symptoms:
Fever or chills
Coughing
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Fatigue
Muscle or body aches
Headache
Loss of taste or smell
Sore or irritated throat
Congestion
Runny nose
Nausea/vomiting
Diarrhea
Continual pain or pressure in the chest
Confusion
Inability to stay awake
Bluish lips or face
(If you do decide to travel make sure that you secure travel insurance.)
